mama memoirs: ruby right now

two is such a fun age. (well, mostly. it has its moments of sheer madness, too.)

one new skill ruby developed is singing songs. she's always liked songs sung to her, like most kids, but lately, she's been singing "happy birthday" to everyone. (especially her cousin, hannah.) she is straight-up OBSESSED with that depressing song cowgirl jessie's sings from toy story 2 & asks me to sing it over & over again to her. but it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that she started singing along with me. of course, it killed me with cuteness. you just try not melting into a puddle when ruby sings "iiiiiii will alwaaaaaays loooove yoooouuu!" in the backseat. it's pretty much impossible.
it's also so wonderful to hear her singing because we grew up singing with my mom a lot in my family & so to carry that on with ruby feels fantastic.

i guess the other part of ruby that's so fun right now is her budding sense of humor & ability to have a give & take kind of a conversation. tonight, she asked to wear a "jacket" that she'd been playing with. it was really her 6-9 month snow suit. I shoved her in it & it was so tight that she couldn't straighten her legs! we were laughing so hard! then she says to me "show dad!!" so, off we went to give dad a good giggle, too. (we were successful.) ;)
and also? she's currently snuggled up with the snowsuit bc she threw a crazy fit when i said we should put it away & i chose not to fight that battle. go ahead, kid, sleep with your snowsuit.

so that's ruby right now. singing songs & sleeping with winter clothing. :)

snow bunny

ruby played in snow for the first time of her 21 months of life today. we have known that she's been a fan of the elements for a long time. probably since she was born. in the hospital, the nurses told us that ruby was given her first bath and they said that she did not like it at all. so when we got home and it came time to clean her up the first time, we were surprised to see that she loved it. since then, she's continued to really like playing in water. in addition, she gets super excited whenever the wind blows through her hair or the rain falls on her face. and then she was introduced to snow. we hadn't gotten much here yet this year but we got a couple inches last night and so she and i ventured out into it today. it was no surprise that she loved it from the start. she threw it in the air and covered her face in it, never seeming to mind how cold it was. and when it was time to go in, i had to drag her out of it. she seemed to have a blast. check it out!

where does the time go?

ruby is 6 months old today.  yeah, that's right.  6 months.  for some reason, six months always seemed like some serious milestone for us to hit.  and now that it's here, it definitely feels like the big milestone i thought it would.  it really has taken about 6 months for me to feel settled into my role as a mom.  breastfeeding is no problem anymore.  i'm confident in knowing what ruby needs or wants at any given time and i don't question the decisions we make for her nearly as much as i used to.  i'm sure it helps that after 4 months, ruby became more interactive and in many ways, just easier to take care of.  and she is growing by leaps and bounds; doing something new every day and i never imagined that i could spend the day just watching someone and be absolutely content and thoroughly entertained.

here's a rundown of ruby right now:

• she rolls onto her back from her tummy quickly and easily
• she tries to sit up from laying on her back ("tries" is the operative word here)
• she is almost growing out of her size 2 diapers
• she is starting solid foods next weekend after her 6 month appt
• she is grabbing at absolutely everything and putting it in her mouth
• her bedtime is 7 pm and she still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night (sometimes more - whoops!). she gets up each day around 6 or 6:30 am
• she sits up on her own for short periods of time
• she loves to swing at the park
• she no longer views her car seat as a torture device and spends most of her time in it talking to herself
• she spins arounnd on her tummy, to grab at things on the floor
• she loves to take baths & splash the water everywhere
• she really likes to be with her cousins. she smiles and laughs at them and looks very content to be sitting between them, just watching tv or "talking". and she loves their hugs.
• she recently started sitting in the shopping cart seat when we go to the store
• today she got her first high chair and she absolutely loves sitting at the table 
• she smiles at strangers and then will bury her head in my shoulder like a little flirt.
• and she is hands down one of the most fun and funniest kids i've ever met
